Aeration technology has proven to be more advantageous when compared to gravity green sand filling in certain green sand property tests and in casting trials. Till now, there were no means whereby foundry engineers could quickly and cost effectively produce standard AFS sand specimens by aeration. This ability will allow engineers to compare the properties between green sand when filled via gravity versus aeration. Most AFS standard green sand test are unable to detect the differences between gravity filled green sand and that which has been aeration filled. However, the friability test and a modified cone jolt test can discriminate between gravity filled green sand and that which has been aeration filled. For this study green sand was aerated in a new, small and portable aeration device. Aeration and gravity filled AFS standard specimens were produced at various compactabilities and tested for friability, ultimate strength, stiffness and toughness. The aeration green sand was always superior for every compactability level studied.
