Materials performance assessment of precision cast aluminium components with novel strain analysis techniques

In materials research, focus on materials performance is essential. To understand what governs materials properties tensile tests are often used in combination with some strain measurement technique. In the present paper digital image correlation (DIC) is presented as a suitable method to be used in materials research and it is shown how the technique can be used for measurements on both microscopic and macroscopic length scales. A brief introduction to computed tomography and how the volume images might be used to determine strains by digital volume correlation (DVC) is also given. The materials used in this study are precision cast aluminium-silicon alloys.
