In order to further enhance the capacity, cost efficiency and system reliability of wind energy turbines for offshore application, the solid solution strengthened nodular cast iron material SiWind® was qualified for usage in wind energy installations during research activities in the project MEGAWind, financed by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety. To prove the material’s load capacity for heavy-walled structures under cyclic loading, extensive cyclic fatigue tests were performed during the research project. The aim of these tests was to determine in detail the cyclic material behaviour of SiWind® under stress and strain control as well as its notch and mean stress sensitivities. By varying the cast block’s thickness and by tests under bending load, the influences of different microstructures and the casting skin on the cyclic material behaviour were also examined. The nodular cast iron material SiWind® was invented to enhance performance, cost efficiency and system reliability of wind energy turbines for offshore application. In the framework of the research project MEGAWind, one aim was to evaluate the material’s structural durability for heavy wall thicknesses.
