Application of resin bonded sand mixtures is essential in most casting production processes. These moulding materials contain fire resistand basic matrices and varoius types of binders and additives in strict production ratios. The chemical reactions at the metal/core interface and the surface quality of the casting are significantly influenced by the decomposition process of binders, which results in gas evolution. Thus it is very important to measure and control the amount and rate of evolved gas. In this recent work, the connection between core gas evolution and forming of surface defects is discussed. Earlier gas measurement methods and their results are reviewed and the initial results of a self-designed core gas measurement method are summarized.
