Inoculation of cast iron to stimulate graphite crystallization – A scientific analysis of practical solutions

Recently the German foundry journal GIESSEREI published four consecutive papers dealing with the inoculation of cast iron. This article summarizes the fundamentals again, points out less known, unknown or even forgotten aspects of inoculation and nucleation and proposes a new theory of graphite formation based on the electron theory of metals. All this is related to the daily practice of a large German iron foundry. Not only is inoculation the last metallurgical step in the casting process, but it is also a flexible means to control the kinetics of graphite growth.
